A new trailer for Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights” just dropped, and it features Jacob Elordi, Margot Robbie and loads of sizzling tension.
The trailer for the new film declares that it is “inspired by the greatest love story” — meaning Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel, Wuthering Heights. Set on the Yorkshire Moors in northern England, the novel tells the story of Heathcliff (Elordi), an orphan taken in by the wealthy Earnshaw family, who falls in love with the Earnshaw daughter, Cathy (Robbie). But when he’s shunned by the family years later, and Cathy chooses to marry a man of her own social standing, Heathcliff returns to exact revenge on all those who wronged him.
The trailer for the Saltburn director’s interpretation of Wuthering Heights appears to be told from Cathy’s perspective as she yearns for Heathcliff while also promising to marry another. But when Heathcliff walks back into her life — beard shaved and looking like a man of high society — she’s torn between following her heart and maintaining social order. Cue smoldering glances, stolen touches and lots of sweat.
In addition to moments of romantic tension, there’s also some decidedly sexy stuff happening, like Heathcliff removing his shirt after being soaked in the rain. It’s all set to an original Charli xcx song — the pop star recorded the soundtrack for the film, and a remix of her song “Everything Is Romantic” was featured in an earlier teaser for the movie.
“So kiss me,” Heathcliff tells Cathy toward the end of the trailer, “and let us both be damned.”
The new “Wuthering Heights” film has been criticized for not remaining true to Brontë’s story — specifically with the casting of the two leads. Heathcliff is described in the novel as having dark skin, hair and eyes and is referred to as a “gypsy,” a slur for the Romani people. Some people have expressed disappointment that a white actor was cast in the role, as has been the case with other adaptations of the book. Meanwhile, 35-year-old Robbie, who also produced the film, is older than Cathy, who is 19 at her oldest in the novel.
Others have questioned whether this version of Wuthering Heights is a faithful adaptation of the story, or if there’s an extra layer the film’s trailers have not revealed. TikToker Jamie McAleney of @itsyourfilmsis went viral for a video in which she suggested that perhaps Robbie is not playing the Cathy of the books but rather a woman who is reading the novel for the first time and placing herself in the role of that character. They pointed to inaccuracies in costuming for the film’s time period as well as the intentional use of quotation marks in the official title of the movie as evidence of this.
No matter what love story is told in the new “Wuthering Heights” film, however, one thing is clear: It will be a steamy one. The new film hits theaters on Feb. 14, 2026.
